Fairy Bite – Print Dilemma

Okay, as you know the Fairy Bite cover has had some contrast and blending issues. Because of that, most retailers now have the alternative cover uploaded. In the interest of getting the print book out SOONER rather than ten years from now, I’m going with this cover as well. Because of the lack of color contrast in the owl/gargoyle cover, I don’t think it will print well. It’s likely to appear muddy with an overly bright title against that background. The back is a match–somewhat muddy with hints of brightness. There’s probably some lofty artist name for this, a technical term that loosely translates to “What the hell is this mess?”

I briefly, in a moment of insanity, considered printing the owl/gargoyle just to see if it could POSSIBLY pass muster…but this sort of thing costs actual money and quite a bit of time. If it turned out that the cover simply didn’t look very good, I’d be stuck with a few copies of an owl/gargoyle that I’d have to sell as “rare, one-time only copies of an artistic disaster.” I’d still have to put time and money into proof copies of the girl and the tower. I did work on yet a third cover. It was…not good.

So if you are wondering why the original choice flew the coop…well, like with most things in life, it comes down to money and time. Or the lack thereof!

Edited to add: I’ve uploaded one with the fairy lights talked about in the comments.
Edited on Sunday: I think I’ve finally gotten the fog right! Y’all have no idea how hard it is to create and move fog and get it to do just what you want!!!

  1. There’s something different about this one or are my mature eyes deceiving me. It looks more blended or natural or something.

  2. There’s more fog. I’m adding a few more fairy lights too before it’s finalized. The back has some butterflies and fairy lights. Working on the spine at the moment…

  3. That explains it. The additional fog makes a difference and so will the fairy lights.

  4. This cover is fine by me (not that you asked my opinion ;>) ). As long as I get the book soon, I’m good. Can’t wait to read it. It’ll be a great break after the hassle of taxes (UGH!!).

  5. Hassle is one word for them. Ugh is even closer…!

  6. Taxes were definitely Hassle and Ugh this year. Last year was worse, though.

  7. I’m captivated by the idea of pegs not in rows or columns and with semi-random spacing; it makes me think ART rather than utility.

  8. In that case, I’m all about art!!! πŸ™‚ Nice to see you Burgundy. Thanks for stopping by!

  9. Think of each randomly spaced peg as a fairy light.

  10. Maria… So sorry, but I REALLY don’t like the new cover 😠!Tell me where to download a copy of owl&gargoyle, please! And to make things worse I also must say I much prefer the original cover of Soul…. the new one looks like a religious tract (IMHO)! But I luv ya, and hope you are having a Blessed Easter! πŸ˜„

  11. Irene, you will want to pre-order Fairy Bite if you want the other cover. As soon as the book goes live, this new cover will be in place, so pre-order:

  12. I love the new cover with the re-positioned fog. I may have to cancel my pre-order and get it with the new cover.
