Scamper is So Weird
We have two cat food bowls in the house, one close to the cat door and one further over in the small kitchenette area. The food is the same in both bowls. If both cats come in at the same time, there should be no fighting because there are two bowls. Sometimes, like today, Scamper comes in by herself. Junior was nowhere to be found. We offered her a treat; she politely refused and went to the nearby bowl. After a small snack, she sat by the kitchen. Politely. Waiting for us to leave the kitchen so she could cross it and go to the other bowl.
Now, why is this, I ask???
I understand that she doesn’t want to take the risk of going through the kitchen with us scary humans in it. But…what I don’t understand is why she needed to at all! The food is the same in both bowls…
When we finished the dishes and left, she went through the kitchen, sampled the food in that bowl and then, after a bit, sauntered back outside.
It makes no sense, I tell you. She’s a feral cat, still wary of us friendly humans. So why does she insist on roaming to the second bowl when the first one is sitting right there full of food???

Because you never know what you are going to find. Just because it was the same food in both bowls yesterday does not mean it is today…food is important.
My can periodically comes and harrasses me to go and stir her bowl of dry food so she can eat. Sometimes it actually needs to be refilled but often it is full, she just wants a reminder that it is there. Or something. Like Trina says, they’re cats. Who can understand ‘em??

Funny kitty behavior….perhaps the second bowl of food, set in a different area, smells slightly different to Scamper. Cats are attracted to food by smell more than taste, or so I’ve read. More likely, by eating a bit out of the second bowl, she is putting her “scent” there, maybe to let Junior know she knows where all the food is and expects it to still be there when she comes back for more.

I can believe she feels a need to let Junior know that EVERYTHING belongs to her. But it’s weird. She walked right by her liver treats to check out that dry food bowl…

She has to make sure she’s not missing out on anything.
