Pedicures for Cats

Scamper is the cleanest cat. Which is why my floors are the dirtiest floors. She is currently using her water bowl to wash her feet. Yes, she does this frequently. Sometimes she comes in with mud on her paws and stands with her two front feet in the water bowl. Then she licks one foot for a bit while the other front foot is soaking. It can take her quite some time to wash off her feet–several stops. In between stops at the water bowl, she runs all over the dining room with her wet (and often still muddy) feet. I kid you not, it looks like a deranged cat was in the dining room on a treasure hunt.

This morning, she washed both her feet several times. Then she put her ball in there to wash it too. She bobbled it around the water, dunked it, nabbed it out with her claws and dunked it again. There’s water all around that bowl because she was splashing around like a duck on vacation. I’m guessing that Junior must have touched her ball and she decided it had Junior cooties or something. After the ball was nice and soaked, she took it out and rolled it all over the place.

The floor now requires a serious mopping. And people wonder why I love my steam floor cleaner.

  1. Scamper sounds a lot like my youngest westie, Gracie. She too loves to stay clean and “washes” her feet and face in the water bowls when she gets dirty. She keeps her little white coat clean most of the time. We even bought her a kid’s pool and she has lots of fun with that in the summertime. So far, I haven’t seen her cleaning any toys but she’s not much of a toy girl anyway. On the other hand, Katie could care less if she’s dirty and so she has “brownish” hair in her beard and her paws between groomings from her digging in the yard. Our animals are awesome and amazing blessings!!

  2. Our animals are crazy as loons, I tell you! Junior takes after her too. We’ve had cats before, but never ones that constantly inspect any and all water sources. I have several water buckets for my garden and if I go out there and fill them, Junior immediately comes over to get a drink. He has a water bowl inside (2) and outside, but if there is fresh water being poured, it must before him. If I turn on the dripper hose in the garden, he goes and stands at one end and drinks from it!

  3. Wow! Scamper sure seems to be more comfortable being inside your home. And why shouldn’t she take full advantage of all the amenities? Just think of the resulting extra clean up tasks as exercise sessions….Scamper’s way of thanking you by keeping you fit and healthy….ha ha ha

  4. Scamper’s comfort levels come and go. Sometimes she’s still very skittish. Other times she acts like she owns the place. Just when we think she’s comfortable, she’ll spend her entire day going in and out as if she’s making sure the door still works! If we close the door, she immediately gets up and demands we open it. She’s a cat all right. Never any doubt. Her goal in life is to confuse the humans!

  5. LOL!! I’ve had several cats who love playing in their water bowl. I also had one cat who wouldn’t drink from the bowl but would, instead, scoop up a paw full of water and lick it off. I solved the problem of the wet floor fairly easily. I got some quilted place mats and put them under the water bowl (I found some for $.10 a piece at Goodwill). They soak up the excess water and cut down considerably on the mess. When they get soaked, I just toss them in the dryer (or the washing machine, as needed) and replace with a dry one. Scamper sounds like a little scamp!
