Under Witch Aura

(Moon Shadow Series)

Cold–Very Cold

It’s 27 out. And almost 11 o’clock–in the DAYTIME. Yes, I’m still in Texas. What happened to the sun??? And global warming for that matter???? (Don’t try to spin this guys. This is cold. It is not some offshoot of it being 105 for 7 days in a row this summer.)

Of course, being cat owners, we’ve been trying to convince Scamp, the feral cat, that she could stand to spend a night or two indoors. She thinks we’ve lost the one brain cell she gives us credit for. (She concluded we have at least one between the two of us because we are good providers of food.) We did see her this morning so we know she has eaten. These feral cats either have somewhere warmer than I can imagine or they hibernate underground somewhere. We’ve opened the garage a tad, but we never see her around there, so I doubt she’ll use it. With our luck two opossums and a skunk will move in.

We’re “scheduled” to stay below freezing for 3 days and nights. The nights will supposedly hit the teens. I buried the snap peas under leaves and blankets, but do not hold much hope for them, especially with the wind. More leaves maybe?? Sometimes you just start over.

Meanwhile, Junior isn’t thrilled with the weather, but he did help batten down the hatches before it set in. BMHusband had to fix the fence so that it didn’t blow over in the 40mph winds. (He wisely worked on this BEFORE the winds started.) Junior helped by spying on the neighbors. (He didn’t want anyone sneaking over to actually help with the fence!) He’s a good lookout, don’t you think???

  1. Yes, Yunior makes a very good lookout!

We’ve been experiencing some really colds temps here in Va Beach, too. During the day, it’s in the 30s, sometimes hitting 40. But at least it’s been sunny.

The dogs love it. Their yard has a southeastern exposure and the winds coming out of the northwest are mostly blocked by the house. Plus they have a roomy doghouse with two doggie beds in it, so if it does get to be a bit much for them, they have a comfortable place to go.

I’m just thrilled it’s not raining!

  2. Rain or snow or sleet…would just be a real bummer. We’re hoping to see 30 today. It was 26 at last check. Quite, quite cold, especially for here. Scamp came by and ate about 3 times (she tends to eat over a period of 1/2 hour or hour, going in and out all the while.) We know she’s alive, but geez. I don’t know how she manages. She must be underground in the tunnels (sewer). It’s supposed to get as cold as 15 tonight. BRrrr.

  3. Maria,
Well, now I do know a little more about you.
I found out that you love cats, and hate cold weather,
and I know which state you reside in at the moment.
    No pictures though.
You sound like a great person to me.
You have a wonderful sense of humor too.
Plus, you write books that I can’t read. No kindle.
Last, but not least, you always have a positive attitude.
Which is really a wonderful thing.
It is cold here in Indy too.Brrrr!
I have two humane society cats.
    But, they are indoor cats.
    I feel safer about them.
    Stay warm and dry.

  4. Cats are definitely safer indoors. Unfortunately, when you trap feral strays, get them fixed and release them (and feed them) they are not too inclined to move indoors. They are very used to their wild ways. It is possible that we could have trained, Junior, the young kitten to be indoor only, but we thought his mother was still feeding him so we tried to make sure they were together. His mother did not tell us that Junior was already pushed from the nest!

The good news is that Junior will happily stay inside on these bitter nights. So we only worry about Scamp, the feral mom. She is not inclined to listen to our worthy advice!

As I tell my husband, I do not like cats, no I do not. :)
It’s just that they continue to find me and demand that I help them. They are elegant and special animals and when put under such strain, how can I resist???

I will have to work on a way for you to read my books!
