First Roma
I picked it!!!! The first roma of the season!!! Yes, yes, I’d rather it be a Celebrity or a beefsteak, but it’s the FIRST ROMA, the first real-sized tomato! I’ve been getting a few Juliets here and there–enough for salads twice now (although meager portions of tomatoes.) This roma marks a whole new trajectory in cuisine for the season–we can have fresh salsa! (Although it will be a very small portion with just the one roma…) We can start thinking about marinara sauces, Italian sausage and tomatoes in cream, tomato garnish and…I bought a few canning jars. Yes, I did! Yes, it is kinda early since I only have *one* tomato ripe, but you never know when they will suddenly get enthusiastic and start turning all at once. That’s the way tomatoes work. They sit there for days and days and then sneak a tomato in here and there. Then, one morning, you go out there and you have red tomatoes all over the garden. Have to be prepared for this sort of thing, you know.
And yes, I did too wait until it was completely red before I picked it. Barely.

Lucky you Maria!
Still too cold to plant them here.

Savor every juicy bite.
happy Friday.
