Beets
I planted beets this winter (most root crops are winter crops here in Texas.) I have about 6 tops that are a nice size. My SIL tells me that I can eat these beet things raw. That’s probably what I’ll do to start. I know I am not going to pickle them. I’m waiting for the shoulders to appear. I hear that is when you pick them. They don’t seem very big yet, but the tops are looking leafy, kind of like lettuce. I hear you can eat the tops in salads. Anyone ever done that? What do they taste like? Are they bitter or beet-like?
One thing, the beets have been pretty easy. Put in soil, water. They grew.
The tomato plant (Juliet) that I planted for overwintering in a pot is doing well also. I bring it inside on nights that go below 50 (such as tonight.) It’s going to be…huge by the end of February when I usually put the plants outside.
The snap peas are growing. Another week and I think they might blossom. That would be good news. I’m very ready for a good bunch of snap peas. Don’t tell the neighbor. He’ll come over and steal them…

I don’t like beets, though in fact, I have never eaten them raw so maybe I do. What I don’t like is pickled beets.

I know I don’t like pickled beets either–so I thought I’d try them raw or boiled with butter.
I made cranberry sauce from scratch for the first time this Thanksgiving–talk about easy–and waaaay better than the canned stuff.

Oh yeah. I don’t like the canned stuff at all but when I tried my brothers sauce (he adds granny smith apples and orange juice), I decided that I’m ok with cranberry sauce. I still won’t mix it with stuffing (savory and sweet don’t go together for me) but I like it at least.

A friend gave me a jar of beets that he had pickled himself. I could never get the nerve up to even try them. My husband refused to eat them saying he tried them when he was a kid and already knew he didn’t like them.
Fortunately, the friend never asked me about them either.
Every year, I say I’m going to make the cranberry sauce from actual cranberries instead of prying the blob out of the can. Not only did I not make them again this year, but forgot to pry the blob out of the can as well.

OMGosh, you are too funny! Making cranberries was about as easy as opening the can and slicing that blob!
I saw the top of one of the beets today…I thought they were supposed to be fat–this one is kinda looking like a carrot. Not gonna be much to eat there…

Beets are great cooked with a little butter, salt and pepper. I also like them on salads. Pickled beets are really good, I used to grow beets and pickle them for my Dad, way back when.
