Backlist Authors

I’ve noticed a few people searching for Kindle versions of out-of-print books/authors. I am going to add a list of these authors as I come across them. For a full list of authors I’ve found who now have backlist on Kindle see here. Some of these will be authors I have read and many of them will be authors I have not read.

Here is one author (really two since it’s a husband/wife team) I know of who have brought back their out-of-print books recently:

A Wicked Slice (Lee Ofsted Mysteries) is the first in a cozy mystery series brought back from 1989.

Aaron Elkins, the author of the Edgar-winning Old Bones, teamed up with his wife, Charlotte, to fashion this lighthearted mystery–a fictional look at the less glamorous side of a golf tour.

In this first Lee Ofsted mystery, Lee is a “rabbit” golfer in the Pacific-Western Women’s Pro-Am. She made it into the tournament by the skin of her teeth and suddenly she can’t keep her long drives from slicing–veering sharply to the right. She is hitting the ball perfectly and it simply isn’t going where it is supposed to. And if Lee can’t get rid of this slice quickly, all the scraping and saving to enter the tournament and stay in it, all the Big Macs and cheap motels, will be for nothing.

Then Lee discovers the body of the tour’s star at the bottom of the course lake, and her own problems with golf techniques pale in comparison. Enter Lieutenant Graham Sheldon. He’s charming, handsome, and determined to capture the killer–as well as Lee’s heart. But the murder has triggered buried anger and petty jealousies among the players. Lee finds out just what wicked means are causing her drives to slice. And it looks like the murderer has barely begun to score….

There are several other titles (The whole series is back from what I could tell by looking at stopyourekillingme.)
Rotten Lies (Lee Ofsted Mysteries) (Book 2)
Nasty Breaks (Book 3)
Where Have all the Birdies Gone? (Book 4)
On The Fringe (Book 5)

Chance for Free Book by Tim Myers

Tim Myers writes cozy mystery books. I’ve read one or two and they are quite good. He recently took some of his out of print books and put them on Kindle. Red Adept is running a giveaway (just leave your name and email in a form.)

He’s giving away 3 of each from 3 different series (Cardmaking, Lighthouse and Soapmaking).

Enter to win. It’s easy. It’s free!

If you don’t win, he has a few of his books at 99 cents! (Cardmaking #1) Also note that the above mentioned series are sold in bundles for Kindle for $9.99 so you get all three for one price if you want!

Elizabeth Peters: Vicky Bliss and Amelia Peabody on sale

One of my favorite authors, Elizabeth Peters, now has her backlist on Kindle–and several of the series is on sale for $4.44 each:

Elizabeth Peters Books

The first in the Amelia Peabody is Crocodile on the Sandbank These stories take place in Egypt–we are talking Indian Jones with a female lead. These are mysteries, adventures and have a touch of romance. Highly recommended for any mystery lover, but especially cozy mystery readers.

The first in the Vicky Bliss series is: Borrower in the Night The Vicky Bliss series is a hilarious series about Vicky, who works in a London museum–at least until she is forced to track down art thieves, murderers…and starts to fall in love with a man who might be an art thief! VERY highly recommended. If you like Janet Evanovich, chick-lit, humor–a good mystery–these are fabulous.

Georgette Heyer — ALL on Sale: $1.99

Georgette Heyer is the Agatha Christie of romance, known for creating certain plots and techniques that have been admired for years. She’s also written mysteries and historical fiction, although she is best known for her Regency Romance. She’s written a LOT of books!

I don’t read much romance anymore, but I fondly remember some of the best romances from the Regency period. If you haven’t tried Heyer, you might want to grab at least one of these at these prices–$1.99 for Kindle. (Good through Aug 21st, but sometimes these deals mysteriously disappear.) Here’s a list of most of her books:

Regency Romance
Reluctant Widow
Arabella
Beauvallet

Bath Tangle
Black Sheep
Charity Girl

Convenient Marriage (I think I’ve read this one.)
Lady of Quality (I think I’ve read this one.)
Masqueraders (And this one.)

Corinthian
Cotillion
Cousin Kate

Devil’s Cub
False Colours
Faro’s Daughter

Foundling
Black Moth
Frederica

Friday’s Child
Grand Sophy
Nonesuch

Powder and Patch
Quiet Gentleman (Maaaybe read this one.)
Regency Buck

Talisman Ring
These Old Shades
Venetia

Mysteries

I don’t think I’ve read any of her mysteries. If someone has, please opine in the comments!

Behold, Here’s Poison (This sounds good)
Blunt Instrument
Death in the Stocks

Detection Unlimited
Duplicate Death
Envious Casca

Footsteps in the Dark (I like this title.)
No Wind of Blame
Penhallow

They Found Him Dead
Unfinished Clue
Why Shoot a Butler? (I like this title too.)

Conqueror
Royal Escape
Infamous Army

My Lord John
Spanish Bride
Simon the Coldheart

Apparently she’s written enough that you need a guide to all her works: Georgette Heyer’s Regency World, written by Jennifer Kloester

Georgette Heyer — Another One Added to the Sale

Apparently Sylvestor: Or The Wicked Uncle remained $9.99 while all the others were on sale, but the book has managed to make an appearance at $1.99 after all!

Even though I don’t read much romance anymore, I had to buy at least one, just for old time’s sake. I bought Fredrica and as soon as I did, I decided I wanted Simon the ColdHeart because it has “chivalry” and only costs $1.79.

In the early 15th century, during the middle of the Hundred Years’ War, England and France were fighting for sovereignty over France. It was a time of hand-to-hand combat, the invention of the longbow, and real knights in armor.

Simon Beauvallet was born in 1386, the illegitimate son of Geoffrey of Malvallet. After his mother’s death in 1400, he and his half-brother, the legitimate son and heir of his father, became great friends of the Prince, fighting against France.

Known for his silence and nicknamed “the Coldheart,” Simon nonetheless loved children and had a complex and deep personality. After the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, he was sent to besiege Belremy, where he met the lady, Margaret, who eventually surrendered to the English and became his bride.

More Backlist – Georgette Heyer

For a full list of authors I’ve found who now have backlist on Kindle see here.

In my quest for backlist titles this morning, I found this 89 cent bargain by Georgette Heyer (This is one of her Regency Romance titles, not her cozy mystery titles.)

The Black Moth (The romance classic!)

Most of her other titles are $7.99 to $9.99, but at least they are available on Kindle. Here are some of her mystery titles:

They Found Him Dead
Footsteps in the Dark
Detection Unlimited
Why Shoot a Butler?
Behold, Heres Poison
Unfinished Clue
Duplicate Death

Many (if not all) of her romance books appear to be available as well.

More Backlist on Kindle – Hal Spacejock – Cozy Sci/fi

Yes, you read that right. Cozy science fiction. That’s the only way I can describe the Hal Spacejock series by Simon Haynes.

The first: Hal Spacejock introduces us to crazy, zany, accident prone Hal. He has a space ship that talks (when it works) and a job to do (he’s sort of a courier service in outer space.)

An incompetent accident-prone pilot is given one last chance to save his ship, an aging robot is trusted with a midnight landing in a deserted field, and a desperate businessman is prepared to sacrifice both of them to get what he wants…

Combining relentless action with non-stop laughs, Hal Spacejock explodes onto the science fiction scene with the subtlety of a meteor strike and the hushed reverence of a used car salesman.

If you’ve always been afraid to try science fiction and you happen to like cozy mysteries…and you’re looking for something pretty different, this is a great launching pad (pun intended.)

Hal Spacejock Second Course

A beautiful and mysterious female passenger, a loony inventor with a basement full of deadly weapons, and a dangerous run-down teleporter built by a long-lost alien civilisation … just some of the challenges facing Hal Spacejock and his metal sidekick Clunk as they fight for survival in the cut-throat interstellar cargo business.

Featuring the incompetent Hal and the long-suffering Clunk, Second Course serves a piping hot dish of interplanetary chaos stuffed with more laughs than a cracker factory and more action than a politician’s expense account.

There’s probably more to come because I think there might be 3 or 4 books in the series, although I haven’t read them because were hard to find before Kindle. These two are also available on Amazon UK and Amazon DE directly.

Good books. Give them a look.

More Out-of-Print for Kindle

They just keep showing up! (For a full list of authors I’ve found who now have backlist on Kindle see here.)

At a totally reasonable price ($2.99 each) the entire Hubbert and Lil series by Gallagher Gray is now available for Kindle!

Partners In Crime (Hubbert & Lil)

Partners In Crime is the first in Katy Munger’s Hubbert & Lil mystery series, writing as Gallagher Gray. This debut novel introduces the wonderful 84-year old Auntie Lil, an unstoppable character who makes Auntie Mame look wimpy, and her buttoned-down 55year old nephew T.S. Hubbert. On his first day of retirement from the venerable private bank, Sterling & Sterling, T.S. is called back into work when one of the bank’s most distinguished partners is found dead in a most unrefined manner. With NYC as a backdrop and a wonderful cast of supporting characters, Partners In Crime is a lively and wryly funny look at The Big Apple and the many characters who live — and sometimes murder — there.

Deb Baker has “reprinted” her cozy books for Kindle readers! (And if you have a Nook, you’re in the read too!)

Murder Passes the Buck : A Gertie Johnson Murder Mystery is the first in a series and a steal at 99 cents!

When her neighbor is shot and killed in his hunting blind, sixty-six-year-old widow Gertie Johnson seizes the opportunity to move on with her life by investigating his death. Gertie is abetted (and hindered) by her grandson Little Donny, man-hungry best friend Cora Mae, and word-of-the-day challenger, Kitty. It doesn’t help that Chester’s death has been ruled an accident by the sheriff of this backwoods community in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Or that Sheriff Blaze Johnson happens to be Gertie’s son.

Whether it’s interrogating neighbors, spying, or impersonating the FBI—not to mention staying one step ahead of Blaze—Gertie will do whatever it takes to solve the case, even when the killer takes aim at her.

Book two: Murder Grins and Bears It : A Gertie Johnson Murder Mystery
Book three: Murder Talks Turkey (This last one is expensive: $9.99! I believe this one is still out from the original publisher.)

She also has the Doll Cozy Mystery series:

Dolled Up For Murder ($5.99)
Goodbye Dolly: A Gretchen Birch Mystery ($2.99)
Dolly Departed: A Gretchen Birch Mystery ($2.99)

More Out-of-Print on Kindle

For a full list of authors I’ve found who now have backlist on Kindle see here.

Elizabeth Ferrars is now out on Kindle. Her books are British Cozies, apparently of the highest caliber! These are fairly expensive, but they seem to be quite popular. I had never heard of the author, and the Kindle books are so new, they don’t have real covers yet.

Give a Corpse a Bad Name

From Amazon Editorials:

“The writer who may be the closest of all to Christie in style, plotting and general milieu” – Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine; “There are few detective story writers as consistently good as Miss Ferrars” – The Sunday Times

Description:

On a cold winter’s night, a man is run over while lying drunk in the middle of a Devon lane. Driving the car is local resident Anna Milne, an attractive widow from South Africa. It could be an unfortunate accident, but strange coincidence hints at more. For the dead man also comes from South Africa. And he has Anna Milne’s address in his pocket… In conjunction with the police, it is Toby Dyke, ex-reporter and man of no fixed occupation, who investigates the curious circumstance of the stranger’s death.

The second in the series is also available: Rehearsals for Murder

Non-series:

I, Said the Fly
The March Hare Murders
Enough to Kill a Horse
Rehearsals for Murder
Designs on Life

Right now these are priced at $8.00. Since they are so old, these books were either scanned in and then had to be copyedited/proofed for mistakes or they had to somehow be re-entered into electronic format. I suspect the price is a reflection of the fact that no electronic copies were readily available for upload. Hopefully the publisher will bring the price down under five dollars at some point.

If any of you have read this author, I’d love to hear your opinion!!

Out of Print Now on Kindle: Lorna Bartlett

For a full list of authors I’ve found who now have backlist on Kindle see here.

Someone I was chatting with was waiting for these. Unfortunately, I cannot remember who it was. Maybe they follow my blog!

Lorna Bartlett has gone Kindle!

Cold Case (A Jeff Resnick Mystery) This one looks right up my alley and at 99 cents??? Who can resist?

This next one appears to be the first in a series. She sometimes writes under L.L. Bartlett so I had to search on both “L.L” and “Lorna” to find all her titles:

Murder on The Mind (A Jeff Resnick Mystery) This one looks a little less cozy and more mystery. Sounds very good and is also reasonably priced (currently $2.99).

Next we have what appears to be a seasonal mystery entry for the series, but it’s only 99 cents: Bah! Humbug (The Jeff Resnick Mysteries)

Out-of-Print Books Now on Kindle

For a full list of authors I’ve found who now have backlist on Kindle see here.

There are a lot of authors bringing their out-of-print books back to Kindle. A series I love has shown up:

Elisabeth Cosin –Zen and The Art of Murder: A Zen Moses Mystery What a writer! I loved this book. I think she only wrote two books, but they are both very good and worth getting your hands on. They were out of print…but! They are now out for Kindle:
If you liked Sue Grafton, Marcia Mullner, Jan Burke–any of the top female sleuth writers, give these a look. Zen and the City of Angels: A Zen Moses Mystery

I know a third was in the works that never came to be. I hope that these showing up on Kindle means the author will put the third one up on her own!

Out-of-Print Now on Kindle

More backlist books on Kindle! (For a full list of authors I’ve found who now have backlist on Kindle see here.)

Donna Ball actually has several she brought back, but her Raine Stockton Dog Mysteries are her most popular. The first two were out of print, but are now on Kindle.

A little bit of cozy suspense:

Smoky Mountain Tracks (Raine Stockton Dog Mysteries)

The second in the series: Rapid Fire (Raine Stockton Dog Mystery)

There are more books in the series, but since those aren’t out of print, the Kindle editions are priced in the 6 and 7 dollar range. Still, the first two are a reasonable $2.99 and that ought to be enough to tell if you’ll like the series!

She has several romance books she has republished in Kindle as well.

Out-of-Print Technothriller now on Kindle

A UK author joins the list of authors bringing their backlist to Kindle. Ian Hocking has made Déjà Vu: A Technothriller (The Saskia Brandt Series) available.

(For a full list of authors I’ve found who now have backlist on Kindle see here.)

Déjà Vu: A Technothriller (The Saskia Brandt Series)

It is 2023. Scientist David Proctor is running for his life. On his trail is Saskia Brandt, a detective with the European FIB. She has questions. Questions about a bomb that exploded back in 2003. But someone is hunting her too. The clues are in the shattered memories of her previous life.

Déjà Vu takes the reader on a startling journey through a possible future, though digital minds, and through the consequences of the choices we make. It is the debut novel by Ian Hocking.

‘You’ve never read anything like Déjà Vu before’
- SFX

‘A crisply-written, fast-paced thriller that makes assured use of cutting-edge science fiction ideas’
– Ken MacLeod.

It’s also at a fantastic price– 99 cents! (About 70 pence in the UK).

It sounds like the kind of book I like to read on an airplane–fast paced and a wild ride. :)
